Hi, i live in Buffalo, NY and have a pet falow deer. She is now 14 years old. I was wondering if you would be able to tell me how to trim her hooves. We have had a vet do it for years, but I’m wondering if it is possible to do ourselves. I also wonder if the food she eats is making her hooves grow faster, deer pellets, little corn, grass and bark. Is there some other type of food we should feed her. I have researched online and can’t find much info on just the fallow. One more question, how long should they be left outside to roam. We have a pen for her with a supply of pellets and water, but we shut the door everynight. Thank you for your time in answering my questions. Any other advise would be greatly appreciated.
Laura, We figured out with our goats that if we had rough gravel going into the barn and on the floor of the barn, they would have to walk across it and it would wear there hooves down. It works great and we rarely have to trim them. It is also working great on the deer. Deer naturally live outside, so they can easily be out there for long periods of time. Hope that is some help. Good luck with your deer.
